On Sunday, February 26th, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. and the greater law enforcement community remembered fallen Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputies.
This year during the annual D.R.E.A.M Fund benefit, there will be a special tribute to Deputies Ralph Zylka and Sung-Hui Bang. The deputies were killed when the Sheriff’s Office helicopter crashed August 17, 2000. Deputy Zylka and Bang were called to assist in a search for a suspect accused of murdering a Chicago Police Officer. They were heading home when their helicopter crashed in a field near Watertown, Wisconsin.
On Sunday, Chicago Police Superintendent Philip Cline presented two inscribed granite benches in memory of Deputies Bang and Zylka. The benches are on permanent display outside the Milwaukee County courthouse.
In 1997, Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputies established a college scholarship fund as a lasting memorial to fallen deputies. The D.R.E.A.M. Fund gives away two $750 scholarships each year.
